October 25, 2007 Update

Program Schedule:

The program schedule as it was sent to the Pocket Program is now available.

Time Change:

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS AT 2 AM, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4. We will be reminding you about this on Saturday. Be sure to change your clocks back to make programming and the bus schedule to the airport or train.

Transportation:

Driving to Saratoga Update. Those driving South on Interstate 87 into Saratoga, there is construction just north of Exit 15, the exit for the City Center. One lane is closed for the construction but traffic was moving smoothly. There is no construction at Exit 15 for those driving North on Interstate 15.

Rely on the directions given by your hotel for driving. Mapping programs not provided by the hotel may not be the best way to get from the Interstate to your hotel.

Weather:

Right now, there will be cool afternoons in the 50 degree range with nights in the low to mid 30 degree range. Be prepared for colder weather and plan for some showers. There will be a coat room in the Saratoga Hotel and Conference Center for those not staying at that hotel.

Shuttle:

Airport Shuttle Schedule is up under Transportation. Cost will be $34 round trip. A Pay Pal Button has been added on the Registration Page to pay for the service.

October 19, 2007 Update

Registration

Registration closed on October 10. We have approximately 1140 members attending. No memberships will be sold at the door. Supporting membership cannot be converted to attending memberships. The Sunday Banquet is also sold out.

Hotels

The Courtyard Marriott reports that they have some cancellations and rooms are available by calling the hotel directly. Rooms are not available using the nationwide reservation system. Rooms are subject to prior reservations. Ask for Christine Curley.

There may also be some rooms at the Hilton Gardens Inn.

Shuttle Service

For those waiting for the shuttle schedule, it is still being developed. All requests should have been sent to us. Additional requests will be filled only if there is space available. We will post the schedule here, probably by Wednesday, October 24 along with payment instructions. We will also email the schedule and information to everyone who requested the shuttle.

Amtrak has announced that they will be doing track reconstruction between Albany and New York City and Albany and Syracuse to the end of November. Trains are subject to delays up to 30 minutes in both directions. We will have a shuttle bus meet every arriving train in Saratoga Spring, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The bus will go to the train station on Sunday, November 4 for those leaving the convention. That schedule will be posted at Registration on Saturday, November 3. The shuttle to the train station will not be running on Monday. The shuttle bus will stop at the Saratoga Hotel and Conference Center from the train station to allow members to register. Everyone will need to transfer to the local shuttle system.

Thursday Event times

Registration will open at 1 PM, Thursday, November 1. The Art Show and Dealer room will also open at that time. The first program item will begin at 3 PM. Opening ceremonies and the Ice Cream Social will begin at 8 PM. The International Horror Guild Awards will begin at 9 PM.

Road Construction

Construction on Interstate 87 is ongoing with delays at Exit 5 just north of Albany and around Exit 15, the last Saratoga Exit. Expect delays at Exit 5 especially at rush hour. So far the work at Exit 15 has not caused delays.

October 11, 2007 Update

Items included in this update are HOTELS, BANQUET, PROGRAM, REGISTRATION, SPECIAL PROGRAMS, DEALERS, ARTISTS, PR 3 AND AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION.

Hotels:

All hotels that the Convention has contracted with, report that they are sold out for the convention. There has been a small number of cancellations so you may want to check back with them if you are looking for a room. The Saratoga Hotel and Conference Center already has a substantial waiting list. There are many bed and breakfasts and other hotels/motels in the Saratoga area. They can be found under the lodging tab which is under the Saratoga tab above. We will be providing a shuttle between the Courtyard, Residence Inn, Holiday Inn, the Hilton Garden Inn and the Saratoga Hotel and Conference Center/Saratoga City Center.

Hotels/motels near those facilities include the Westchester House Bed and Breakfast which is located two blocks from the Holiday Inn. Guests there can avail themselves of the shuttle stop at the Holiday Inn. Additionally, if the weather is mild the Westchester is about a 15 minute walk to the City Center.

All of the Westchester's rooms have private baths. Breakfast is also served. Rates range from $140 to $205, breakfast included, per night.

Banquet

The menu for the Sunday afternoon World Fantasy Banquet and Awards Ceremony is posted on the Exhibits and Services page. Reservations can be made through PayPal on the Registration page or by sending the Member Services Registration form to our PO Box 1086, Schenectady, NY 12301. Unreserved seating will be at tables of eight. Reserved tables of eight or ten can be obtained by contacting publisherliaison@firstduty.com. We do not expect seats to be available at the door. We will place requests on a waiting list in the order received once we reach our maximum seating.

Program

Programming information has been sent to all registered members who indicated an interest in being on the program. If you are a registered member who wishes to participate in programming and have not received programming information please contact program@firstduty.com. A preliminary program will be posted on the website when it is available. Programming will begin on Thursday, November 1 at 3 PM. We will not be able to respond to requests for information on program items until we post the preliminary program. Similarly, the membership list on the website contains the most updated information on registered attendees. As we are told members cannot attend, we are removing their names from the list.

Registration

Many members who paid through PayPal have not sent in the Membership Registration form. Please fill out the form and send it to the Post Office Box. You may be delayed at registration if we do not have your form. Forms are available on the Registration page and are included in PR 3. Registration will open Thursday, November 1 at 1 PM. The Art Show and Dealer Room will open at the same time. Registration is located opposite the Saratoga Hotel and Conference Center Registration desk.

Special Programs

Saturday evening there will be 2 performances of "A Pleasing Terror" an adaptation of 2 of M. R. James's ghost stories by Robert Lloyd Parry. This an atmospheric telling of two of the eeriest and most entertaining stories of M. R. James, the master of English ghost stories. This one man reading has been performed over 80 times in the United Kingdom and Ireland. There will be limited seating for each of these performances.

Saratoga has regular "Ghost Walks" during the year. Haunted History Ghost Walks, Inc. will conduct a tour for those interested on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening. Tours will start at 7 PM. from the Saratoga Hotel and Conference Center lobby. The cost will be $10 for adults and $5 for children between 7 and 11 years old. The tour will be conducted by Mason Winfield. He has authored 5 books including Shadows of the Western Door (1997), A Ghosthunter's Journal (1999), Spirits of the Great Hill (2001), Haunted Places of New York (2003) and Village Ghosts of Western NY (2006). These tours are very popular and give a good look at the village of Saratoga Springs and its 'ghostly' history.

Several collectors have agreed to loan Jeff Jones artwork for a special display in the Art Show. We already have a substantial number of panels for this special presentation.

PR 3

Progress Report 3 has been mailed to all registered convention members as of September 19. It will be posted on the PR page. Members who joined after September 19 will be sent a PR 3.

Airport Transportation

Transportation between Albany International Airport and Saratoga is by local bus, taxi or private car and personal automobile. The convention will provide a shuttle service based on need. Reservations will be required. We will not meet every plane but provide service that covers as many flights as possible.

If you want to purchase transportation between Albany International Airport and Saratoga from the convention, you must fill in the transportation section of the Member Services Registration form and return it to us. You can email the information requested to transportation@firstduty.com. We will confirm each reservation and provide payment information after October 15. Space may not be available on our shuttle if we do not have an advance registration.
